UPM Digital Month 2025

UPM Digital Landscape 2026–2030
Digital Coherence in Addressing the AI Transformation Conundrum

The UPM Digital Month 2025 has successfully come to a close, further reinforcing Universiti Putra Malaysia’s (UPM) commitment to accelerating the university’s digital transformation agenda. The programme served as a strategic platform to support UPM’s direction towards the development of an AI-ready university ecosystem through more coherent and integrated alignment of policies, data, and technology.

UPM’s Digital Transformation Commitments and Aspirations

  • Strengthening an integrated, secure, and competitive university digital ecosystem.
  • Supporting the national aspiration to position Malaysia as an AI-driven nation by 2030.
  • Shifting the focus from mere system implementation to the development of a more strategic, data-driven, and impact-oriented university operating model.

 The AI Transformation Conundrum

  •  Universities face a new dilemma (conundrum):
    • The need to scale up the adoption of technology and AI,
    • While ensuring that innovation genuinely solves real problems faced by the university community.
  • The use of AI must not increase process burdens, compromise values, or undermine the integrity of data governance. This necessitates job restructuring, process re-evaluation, and a more mature approach to digital governance.

Digital Coherence as the Foundation

  • UPM’s digital transformation must be grounded in holistic alignment across five dimensions:
    • Policy,
    • People,
    • Technology,
    • Cybersecurity,
    • Data sovereignty.
  • Digital coherence is critical to prevent:
    • Policy conflicts,
    • Misaligned systems,
    • Inconsistent user experiences.
  • It serves as the foundation for aligning priorities and implementation across all Responsibility Centres (PTJ), ensuring that the value of transformation is shared collectively.

UPM Strategic Initiatives and Progress

  • The development of digital infrastructure and capabilities includes:
    • PUTRA®VID as the core of an integrated digital identity,
    • Putra Fiber (FTTR) to strengthen campus network connectivity,
    • Strategic 5G and AI collaboration with Digital Nasional Berhad,
    • Implementation of the GenAI Playbook in teaching and learning.
  • These initiatives are supported by two key drivers of UPM’s AI transformation:
    • UPM AI Enablers (S.K.U.A.D),
    • Putra®Insights as a real-time, data-driven decision-making platform.

UPM’s Strategic Positioning and Future Direction

  • With a strong foundation in place, UPM is now strategically positioned to:
    • Enhance operational efficiency,
    • Strengthen high-impact research,
    • Deliver more adaptive learning experiences,
    • Further reinforce cybersecurity and university data sovereignty.
  • This transformation reinforces UPM’s role as:
    • An AI-ready university,
    • A leader in digital transformation in higher education,
    • A key strategic partner in the national digital agenda.
