Digital Technology and Islamic Ethics: Upholding Manners in the Virtual World

The rapid growth of digital technology today has brought countless conveniences to daily life. Communication is faster, information is easily accessible, and social connections transcend national borders. However, alongside these advancements, Islam emphasizes the importance of upholding manners and ethics so that technology is not misused in ways that contradict the principles of Shariah and human values.

Technology as a Tool, Not the Ultimate Goal

In Islam, technology is viewed as a wasilah (means) to achieve goodness and the well-being of the ummah. The Qur’an and Hadith often remind us of the importance of using Allah’s blessings responsibly. Therefore, digital technology should be harnessed to strengthen relationships, increase knowledge, and ease life’s affairs — not to spread slander, humiliate others, or encourage heedlessness.

Manners in the Virtual World

  1. Guarding the Digital Tongue – Just like in the real world, words shared online should be free from insults, slander, or baseless accusations.
  2. Avoiding the Spread of False Information – Islam emphasizes tabayyun (verification of information) before sharing news. Careless sharing can fuel slander and conflict.
  3. Monitoring What Is Viewed and Shared – Muslims are encouraged to avoid content that distracts, is immoral, or goes against Islamic principles.
  4. Protecting Privacy and Dignity – Exposing another person’s faults or private matters online is against Islamic teachings, which stress the importance of preserving individual dignity.

Ethical Challenges in the Digital Era

Technology’s conveniences often tempt users into excess and negligence. This includes social media addiction, information overload, and viral culture that at times conflicts with Islamic ethics. Muslims are urged to balance their engagement in the virtual world with spiritual, social, and family responsibilities.

Islam as a Digital Guide

Islamic principles such as trustworthiness, honesty, moderation, and responsibility serve as valuable guidance in navigating the digital sphere. Contemporary scholars also highlight the relevance of maqasid shariah — safeguarding religion, life, intellect, lineage, and property — as an ethical framework for modern technology.

Conclusion

Digital technology is a blessing that can bring immense benefits when guided by Islamic manners and ethics. Every Muslim bears the responsibility of ensuring that their online interactions reflect noble character, in line with Islamic teachings. In this way, technology not only eases worldly affairs but also becomes a platform for strengthening faith, promoting da’wah, and advancing the well-being of the ummah.
