Bintulu, 13 Februari 2025 –
Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) made history as the first Public Higher Education Institution (IPTA) in Malaysia and the first higher education institution in Borneo to use CWDM (Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexing) technology in its infrastructure. The UPM Vice Chancellor has inaugurated the Putra Fiber service in conjunction with the 2025 Vice Chancellor Message Ceremony which took place at Dewan Sri Kenyalang, UPM Bintulu Sarawak Campus.
The Putra Fiber project, implemented by the Infocomm Development Center (iDEC), involves the replacement and upgrade of computer network equipment in all residential colleges at Serdang Campus and Bintulu Campus. This project is a pioneering Fiber to The Room (FTTR) network initiative that combines CWDM optical technology and WiFi-6 technology to provide a high-speed, more stable campus network capable of supporting the increasing data demand.
This Putra Fiber project has been successfully completed at Sri Rajang College, UPM Bintulu Campus on 29 November 2024 in the implementation of 1 phase only, with the installation of 800 WiFi-6 AP units from Ruijie Networks. With an investment value of RM1.9 million, this project is expected to improve the digital experience of UPM Campus Bintulu residents as a whole. Meanwhile, the implementation of Phase 1 of Putra Fiber at UPM Serdang Campus is expected to be completed by the end of February 2025 involving 2 residential colleges. Phase 2 and Phase 3 will be implemented after that involving 7 residential colleges and are expected to be fully completed in early 2026.
The inauguration of Putra Fiber also opens up space for strategic collaboration between UPM and Ruijie Networks in empowering infrastructure and digital transformation in UPM and the State of Sarawak. UPM remains committed to realizing a learning and research ecosystem based on the latest technology for the benefit of students and the academic community as a whole.
