SERDANG, 29 July 2026 – Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) has achieved another significant milestone with the successful completion of the Putra®Fiber UPM Project, making UPM the first university outside China to successfully implement Passive Ethernet Network (PEN) technology through a strategic collaboration with Huawei.
This achievement reflects UPM’s commitment to strengthening its digital infrastructure and enhancing information and communication technology (ICT) facilities to meet the evolving needs of the university community. The project was implemented through a collaborative effort involving Impian Iltizam Sdn. Bhd., the InfoComm Development Centre (iDEC), and UPM residential colleges.
The Putra®Fiber Project was implemented in three phases, commencing in October 2024 and successfully completed in April 2026. The project involved the installation of 7,456 Access Points (APs) across 12 UPM residential colleges, significantly expanding and strengthening wireless network coverage within student accommodation areas. The project was funded under the Twelfth Malaysia Plan (RMK12), Rolling Plan Four (RP4) allocation.
The implementation of PEN technology through this project represents a strategic step towards strengthening UPM’s network infrastructure by establishing a more integrated, efficient, and future-ready network foundation to meet the university’s growing digital requirements. The infrastructure enhancement also focuses on improving the stability, capacity, and coverage of internet connectivity, particularly in residential colleges, which are among the key locations for students’ academic activities and campus life.
With the enhanced network infrastructure in place, students can benefit from more stable, faster, and comprehensive internet connectivity to support digital learning activities, access to academic resources, communication, and the use of various online platforms and applications. At the same time, the initiative contributes to UPM’s efforts to create a more conducive, competitive, and technology-enabled campus environment aligned with current digital developments.
The successful implementation of the Putra®Fiber Project also highlights the importance of strategic collaboration between the university, industry partners, and stakeholders in advancing the digital transformation agenda. Strong collaboration among these parties helps ensure that ICT infrastructure development is carried out systematically, effectively, and in accordance with the actual needs of the university community.
This achievement is expected to serve as a catalyst for the implementation of more innovative digital initiatives in the future, particularly in strengthening connectivity, enhancing the digital experience of the campus community, and supporting UPM’s aspiration to remain competitive in the digital era.
Congratulations and well done to all parties involved in the successful implementation of the Putra®Fiber UPM Project. May iDEC continue to excel in strengthening the university’s technology ecosystem and delivering quality, innovative, and high-impact digital services to support the needs of the university community and the continued excellence of UPM.
