25 July 2024, Putrajaya: Amazon Web Services, also known as AWS, is a subsidiary of Amazon that provides cloud computing platforms and APIs. If you're looking for generative AI, computing power, database storage, content delivery or other functions, AWS has services that can help you build sophisticated applications with increased flexibility, scalability and reliability.

Customers will often use this in combination with autoscaling (a process that allows customers to use more computing at times of high application usage, and then reduce costs when there is less traffic). This cloud computing web service provides a variety of services related to networking, compute, storage, middleware, IoT and other processing capacity, as well as software tools through AWS server farms. This frees customers from managing, scaling and patching hardware and operating systems.

One of the basic services is the Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), which allows users to have a group of virtual computers, with very high availability, that can interact with over the internet through the REST API, CLI or AWS console. AWS virtual computers mimic most of the attributes of real computers, including hardware central processing units (CPUs) and graphics processing units (GPUs) for processing; local memory/RAM; Hard disk storage (HDD)/SSD; operating system options; network; and pre-loaded application software such as web servers, databases and customer relationship management (CRM).

A total of 18 participants from UPM attended an introductory session to Amazon Web Services (AWS) and a Proof of Concept (PoC) workshop that was held for one day on 25 July 2024, located at the Double-Tree Hilton Putrajaya with the aim of providing exposure to AWS services and also specific topics regarding Privacy and Data Security.

The topic of Privacy and Data Security was presented by Dr. Dzaharudin Mansor (Country Security Assurance Head, AWS) while the PoC proposal was presented by Mr. Hisham Ismail.
