UPM Digital Landscape 2026–2030: Digital Coherence in Addressing the AI Transformation Conundrum

Serdang, 10 December – The UPM Digital Month 2025 concluded successfully, reinforcing the university’s efforts to accelerate digital transformation. The programme supports UPM’s strategic direction towards an AI-ready ecosystem through more coherent alignment of policies, data, and technology.

The organisation of UPM Digital Month 2025 underscores the university’s commitment to strengthening an integrated and competitive digital ecosystem, in line with the national aspiration of positioning Malaysia as an AI-driven nation by 2030. This transformation requires the university to move beyond mere system implementation towards the development of more strategic, data-driven, and impact-oriented operating models.

The Vice-Chancellor emphasised that universities are now facing a new conundrum: the need to advance the large-scale adoption of technology and AI, while at the same time ensuring that every innovation genuinely solves real problems faced by the university community, does not create new burdens, and does not compromise values, ethics, or data sovereignty. This reality necessitates a restructuring of ways of working, a reassessment of processes, and the establishment of more mature digital governance.

In parallel, the Chief Digital Officer (CDO) highlighted the importance of digital coherence as the foundation of UPM’s transformation. This coherence spans five dimensions—policy, people, technology, cybersecurity, and data sovereignty—which must progress in tandem to avoid policy conflicts, system misalignment, and inconsistent user experiences. This coherent approach forms the core of aligning frameworks, priorities, and implementation across all Responsibility Centres (PTJs), ensuring that each initiative delivers collective value to the university.

UPM has strengthened the foundation of its transformation through the development of PUTRA®VID, the expansion of campus connectivity via Fiber To The Room (FTTR), also known as Putra Fiber, 5G and AI collaboration with Digital Nasional Berhad, and the implementation of a GenAI Playbook in teaching and learning. These advancements are supported by UPM’s AI enabler framework (S.K.U.A.D) and the Putra®Insights platform, which drives real-time, data-driven decision-making.

With an increasingly robust foundation, the university is now strategically positioned to enhance operational efficiency, drive high-impact research, deliver more adaptive learning experiences, and further strengthen cybersecurity and data sovereignty.

The achievements of UPM Digital Month 2025 reaffirm the university’s direction in building a coherent, secure, and sustainable AI-ready ecosystem, while strengthening UPM’s role as a leader in higher education digital transformation and a key strategic partner in the national digital agenda.
