Digital transformation is a strategic agenda for universities in strengthening governance, enhancing academic excellence, and improving the quality of service delivery. In line with this direction, the adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is increasingly recognised as a key enabler for operational efficiency, data-driven decision-making, and innovation across teaching, research, and administrative functions.

From an Islamic perspective, AI is viewed as a supporting tool that assists university communities in fulfilling their responsibility as khalifah in managing knowledge, resources, and services. AI does not replace the role of humans; rather, it enhances human capability through the automation of routine tasks, intelligent analytics, and decision-support systems. Moral responsibility and accountability remain firmly with humans as the holders of trust (amanah).

The use of AI in university digital transformation is encouraged as long as it brings maslahah, or known public benefit. This includes improved governance efficiency, optimised data management, reduced operational risks, and more responsive and inclusive service delivery. However, AI adoption must be implemented in an ethical, transparent, and well-governed manner to ensure that academic integrity, data privacy, and human values are preserved.

In responding to changes in the workplace brought about by digitalisation and automation, Islam emphasises the principles of justice (ʿadl) and excellence (ihsan). University digital transformation should therefore be accompanied by continuous human capital development through digital upskilling, AI literacy, and the cultivation of an innovative work culture. This approach ensures that technology serves as an enabler of institutional excellence rather than a force that marginalises the workforce.

In conclusion, AI is a vital component of the university digital transformation ecosystem. When guided by Islamic values such as trust, justice, and public benefit, the adoption of AI can support the development of a competitive, ethical, and human-centred university that delivers meaningful impact to society.
